The Sports Thread
This thread is dedicated to my favorite football team, the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sorry to hear about Palmer, Ed.

Ford- 01-09-2006

Thanks. It was on the second play of the game. I think we could have won if we had him.

Jack Rangely- 01-09-2006

Yea, at first I thought the Bengals had a really high chance of winning. I was pretty disappointed.

Harvey Ballsmith- 01-09-2006

You could do a hell of a lot worse than Kitna, though. I've always liked him, and I have no doubt that he would be a successful starter for any number of teams. Sorry about that game, though. I wanted the Bengals to win, but I didn't really think they would, so I had to pick the Steelers. It's good news for me, though, so I hope that gives you some comfort as you watch all the other teams who are better than yours throughout the remainder of the playoffs.

I find it ironic that a team named the Vikings got into trouble for having a pagan sex party on a boat. Maybe this year they can burn a few villages to live up to their namesakes.

I still think that, as a form of punishment from the league, Daunte Culpepper should have been forced to play through his injury.

Ford- 01-10-2006

from ESPN. When Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer was lost to a torn knee ligament after throwing his first pass -- I'll give Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen the benefit of the doubt and call it an accidental dirty hit -- I did want to use my Staples Easy Button and make the Steelers use backup QB Tommy Maddox the rest of the game. The Bengals would have won if Palmer hadn't been carted off. In fact, you can bet Palmer's stunning injury prompted private sighs of relief in Indianapolis. Palmer's nuclear capability would have posed a slightly greater threat to Indy in Indy than Pittsburgh will next Sunday or New England will in the AFC championship game.

I never liked him at Seattle. He's good...just not a "winner." Back when Seattle wasn't winning, the problem wasn't Kitna. It just wasn't a team built to win. I think if Kitna was still playing in Seattle, he'd do as well as if not better than Hasselbeck.

While you have a point there, about Seattle not being a winning team in that era the Seattle recievers were "hung out" a lot. Many had to have opposing Safetys and Corners surgically removed from their ribcages and lower backs. Ford, I love ya' man but I don't think The Bengals would have been able to keep Dwight Freeney off Palmer's back long enough for his recievers to get away from the Indy DBs. Sorry. But I reckon we'll never know. (You all remember how kind I'm being when Seattle gets handed their heads. :D )

Harvey Ballsmith- 01-10-2006

It's true that Kitna wasn't exactly a great quarterback for Seattle, but I think he's improved dramatically since then, not only in the physical aspects of the position, but also as a leader. There are some skills you can only learn with experience. Of course I'm not trying to make a case for Kitna as one of the NFL's elite QB's, because that would be silly, but I think if Carson Palmer isn't ready to go next year, the Bengals would be in very capable hands with Kitna. On a completely unrelated topic... Ford, what ever happened to Darnay Scott?

Jim Beam- 01-10-2006

Yes I MUST admit I noticed Kitna had improved his leadership skills greatly but a 60% completion rate, 197 TOTAL YARDS, and a QB rating of only 60.1 tell the story for a QB who had 40 pass attempts. I think those stats make my point. I heard he was already talking to the Raiders... about being their back up QB. Really, I'n not trying to argue. Just a friendly debate Jorge. And sorry to be so negitive about your second string QB Ford.
